Storytelling and Christmas go well together. Some stories are familiar, and some are newly told. Some are classic, and some are very old. Taking 10 minutes to read a short story is rejuvenating – at any age. ♦
The work and school take a pause. Perhaps. Hopefully. The hustle and bustle do not as the preparations are made for the most beautiful and special holiday of all – Christmas.
At some point over these Christmas holiday days, while there is time for family and food and honoring the birth of Jesus, do find some time to sit quietly and ponder, like Mary, the things you have seen, heard, and experienced, this year and over your life. And like a good book or story, it never gets old. It actually can be rejuvenating if you allow the time to rest, relax, and take it all in.
And at Christmastime, good stories abound. A good story can be fictional or historical. Some are familiar and newly told – some are classic, and some are very old
But Christmas stories are worth telling and remembering, and passing on to new generations, while older generations can be given an encouraging boost in remembrance of days gone by. I love to read and reread Christmas stories that uplift, encourage, and stir me with the truths and questions and realities of the significant events around the Christmas celebration.
Here is a varied collection of short but touching Christmas stories and Biblical Viewpoints to read and ponder in front of a fire with a cup of hot tea or coffee. May your mind, heart, and spirit be stirred.
- A Christmas Miracle – A good one for young ones to understand a past not too long ago. This touching short story by novelist Taylor Caldwell of her own most wondrous Christmas when she had just about lost all hope. Read here.
- The Yellow Kite – This is one of my favorites. Another touching story suited for all ages of a little boy’s one small request and an answered prayer when hope runs out. Read here.
- “Mother, I’m Here” – A good one for families, together and split apart. All past and present pain and brokenness require love and forgiveness. Here’s a touching story of family love reborn at Christmastime. Read here.
- The Tale of Three Trees – A classic morality tale that fits the season and provides a thoughtful lesson for all of us, young and old, who have big dreams, great disappointments, or long periods of waiting and longing. Read here.

- Christmas Dreams and Visions – All of the Christmas stories about the birth of Jesus are filled with supernatural dreams and visions. They seem strange and weird. Did these really happen or are they all nice fairy tales? Read here.
- What About the Christmas Star? – Was the star real? Was the iconic symbol of the birth of Christ really a new star, a comet, aligned planets, a nova or supernova? Have you considered perhaps another option? Read here.
- The Preposterous Christmas Story – A good one for your skeptical family members. There’s just one problem for all of us in dealing with the preposterous story of the birth of Christ: it’s true. Read here.
- Merry Christmastime Culture – With our modern pace and sophisticated life, how do we reconcile this secularized holiday season with the reality of what we’re really celebrating? How do we deal with the Jesus thing? Read here.
- So What About Hanukkah? – Is it my imagination or do we just not hear as much “Happy Hanukkah” these days? What’s the real story behind Hanukkah anyway? Read here.
- Mary, Did You Know? – Consider the situation of Mary. Imagine the fear, wonder, and hopeful expectation. Did she really know what was happening? Reconsider her story voiced in a beautiful song. Read here.
- The Larger Christmas Story – Christmas is only the beginning of the climax of a larger story that goes back hundreds of years before the time of Jesus. Even after 400 years of silence. Read here.
Enjoy the read; enjoy the time to relax. Make it special this year and ponder the wonder of another beautiful Christmas season.
Merry Christmas!

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. – Luke 2:16-19
