Is Your World(view) Changing?

As the world turns, the world is changing. Did you think it would change this much? What’s going on? Maybe you’re changing as well.

Have you noticed, perhaps, that fewer of your friends are attending church on a regular basis? Maybe that’s true for you too.

Of course, there are lots of good reasons why this is so. We’re busy with sports/games, events, family stuff. And people can catch sermons online too now, right?

Have you noticed any of your friends or family members now having softened views about homosexuality or transgenderism?

How about on abortion?

How about anyone in the family or a friend now expressing doubts about the Bible as the true and inspired Word of God? Perhaps you find them just not as adamant with that stance anymore.

Finally, do you know anyone who has a changing view that favors socialism over capitalism?

If your answer to any of these questions is Yes, you’re not alone. The world is changing quickly, and many Christians are changing right along with it.

Are you changing?

Churchgoers Losing their Biblical Bearings – Barna Research
Perhaps not you, but many around you are changing. A new report describing the continuing ideological and spiritual shift among Americans shows how traditional biblical beliefs are being pushed aside by people who consistently attend Christian churches.

That transition is leading to more churched adults abandoning traditional conservative perspectives on social and political issues amid a firm disinterest in their worldview. These findings come from a national survey of 1,000 regular churchgoers, commissioned by Family Research Council and conducted by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University under the direction of veteran researcher Dr. George Barna.1

Here are some of the highlights revealing startling trends:

  • Biblical worldview in decline: About one-third (30%) of churchgoers believe they have a biblical worldview—but only 11% actually do. Fewer than half think it’s “very important” for Christians to have one, down sharply from 59% two years ago. Nearly half (45%) say they do not have—or don’t know if they have—a worldview at all.
  • Moral clarity eroding: Fewer than half of regular churchgoers believe the Bible speaks clearly on homosexuality (47%) or transgenderism (39%)—and barely half (51%) say it is clear on abortion. Each represents a double-digit decline in biblical certainty since 2023.
  • Scriptural belief fading: Only 54% of churchgoers say the Bible is the true or inspired, error-free Word of God.
  • Shift away from conservatism: Fewer churchgoers now identify as conservative on social and fiscal issues. Just 34% call themselves conservative, while nearly as many say they are moderate (29%) or liberal/progressive (19%). Even fewer say they base their votes primarily on biblical teaching—down from 51% in 2023 to just 46% today.
  • Support for socialism rising: One in three (32%) churchgoers now prefer socialism over capitalism.

These findings reveal a growing Biblical drift inside America’s churches. Even as 93% of churchgoers are registered to vote and most say they pay close attention to the news, relatively few said they rely on biblical truth to shape their beliefs or choices.

What Happened?
There are lots of reasons. Covid had an impact; however the spiritual drifting trend was happening prior to 2020. Politics, secular education, and a growing secularization of all ages through social media and information/entertainment overload has had its effect.

The good news is that Jesus is interesting and somewhat relevant to the masses, though more as a representative of love and kindness, as opposed to the savior of the world who saves us from the wrath of God.

But all’s not lost. Not even close.

A Biblical Worldview
Those with a real Biblical worldview pray and know that prayer is the real change agent. We know that the Spirit of God cannot be beaten. So through the Spirit of God we pray for small things and big things. We pray for hearts to melt and break and succumb to the God that loves all people, everyone, even sinners like ourselves.

We know that God’s love plays out in His patience and that our awakening  sometimes takes a lifetime, as it did with some of us and some of those we love. We’ve seen breakdowns and breakthroughs. We’ve seen evil squelched and throttled. We’ve seen blessings upon blessings in the midst of hardships and misses. We’ve seen the demonic scatter and flee as the Spirit of God holds ground.

Throughout it all, and for the rest of our lives as we now know too much, we maintain a worldview that holds the Biblical One True God as supreme and sovereign, transcendent, eternal, and immanently within us. A real Biblical worldview holds that the Lord God has been revealed through the Biblical Scriptures and has been manifested in the flesh through Jesus Christ, who lived, died an atoning death for all mankind, past and present, and conquered death through His resurrection, for all of us as well, those who believe and are reckoned therefore by Holy God as righteous through that belief alone.

And that view knows right from wrong; that is, moral truth. Not Old Testament Hebrew law, but righteous truth defined and fulfilled by Jesus, as expressed in the New Testament.

But we have to read it to understand it; we have to study it to absorb it. Or simply submit our whole heart and soul to it to experience it.

Anything else or anything less is living through change without moorings and purpose, easily tossed with temporal winds, drifting about without depth and real substance.

The good news is that all of us, churchgoers and non-churchgoers, are susceptible to a Christ-infused transformational wake-up call that can change and redirect our lives. And even as the world drifts and changes, that will never change.

Are you changing or securely anchored in a changing world?
