Selecting a President – a Biblical Viewpoint

Two Christian leaders disagree strongly over the US presidential election. One says one way to vote; the other says another way to vote. I would add a different perspective when looking at this issue. ◊

There has been a fascinating exchange of ideas conveyed in articles this past week written by two respected pillars of the American Christian community. John Piper and Wayne Grudem are big conservative voices for the evangelical church. Each published articles about the US presidential election. Grudem took a strong but gracious opposing stance against the position taken by his longtime friend, John Piper.

Essentially, John Piper comes out against both candidates, saying that President Donald Trump is morally bereft and that candidate Joe Biden is deficient regarding public policy.1 Grudem favors President Trump for his pro-life position and other economic policies that he finds superior to that of the opposition candidate. While Piper ultimately settles on voting for neither candidate, Grudem makes a strong conclusion that Christians should vote for President Trump, and that any protest vote, non-vote, or vote for the opposition is the antithesis of Biblical standards and beliefs.2

Consider 3 Guiding Principles in Selecting Leaders
Before I share my own voting preference, let me say that I’m motivated by 3 guiding principles in choosing or voting for, (or hiring) leaders, in politics and in business: Competence, Fairness, and Goodness (ideally Godliness).

I want leaders that are excellent and highly capable in what they do. I also want leaders that operate by set rules and standards and do not cheat or abuse or selfishly manipulate circumstances for their own benefit. Finally, related to fair play, but going further, I want leaders that are good people, even Godly people. They don’t have to be Christian, but they have to acknowledge and respect God, Jesus Christ, and the Word of God, the Bible. With no expectation of perfection, as we are all sinners and fall short, out of that recognition of a Higher Authority and the existence of dictums of moral guidance, that leader should be guided and motivated to “do good in the eyes of the Lord.”

I will break it down further:

1. Competence – I have long desired a US President that operated like a competent CEO of a major corporation. The presidency of the United States is a significant job that requires executive level skills and intellectual competence. Skill and competence come from experience and hard work and study. Top producers/leaders show their prowess by their work output and success metrics.

Additionally, for any executive level position, the breadth and depth and import of matters at hand are tremendous for one person. A CEO, like the President, requires the ability to build a trustworthy team around them and the ability to multi-task and communicate a plan of action. The real proof ultimately, however, is in the results. Executives in business and politics who markedly achieve what they set out to accomplish prove their worth and earn my support, assuming they score well in the other following areas.

2. Fairness – The US is a nation run by the Rule of Law. Without adherence to prescribed moral and legal ground rules, there would be chaos and anarchy in the streets. A leader should themselves operate under these rules for themselves and their families in all matters of personal and public life. Any illegal activity is a breach of public trust and should be addressed as no one person or family are themselves above the law. Fairness does not preclude competitiveness or aggressive play. Winners in sports, business, politics, and life, are those that play/work hard with assertive passion, but fairly without cheating or illegally cutting corners. Those that cheat are not winners.

3. Goodness (ideally Godliness) – The US President need not be a saint or Sunday School teacher or have the perfect family life. The same is true for any person elected to Congress or selected to be a CEO of any sized company. They may even have had a sordid past life that has been turned around and is now back on track. But they must now be good. They must know right from wrong, and recognize evil when they see it. And not be afraid to boldly call it out and confront it. As stated, they may not even be a Christ-following Christian. We all know people whose life was a long journey moving toward a fully-surrendeed life of faith and obedience to Christ. But to that end, a US President should acknowledge and respect and even “fear the Lord God” with homage paid to the Word of God (the Bible) and the community of Christians and all peoples of faith.

So, Trump vs. Biden?
I suspect that we all know Christians who are averse to President Trump for being guilty of “unrepentant sexual immorality” and “unrepentant boastfulness” or against Joe Biden for supporting policies that endorse “baby-killing,” “sex-switching,” and “socialistic overreach,” – to use John Piper’s terms. We’ve probably engaged in genteel and even heated debates on these matters with our Christian and secular friends.

I agree with Wayne Grudem’s assertion that a leader’s character flaws do not necessarily degrade a nation. He points out that:

while King Jeroboam “made Israel to sin” (1 Kings 14:16), the previous chapters do not say that this involved imitation of Jeroboam’s moral character, but instead the text specifies that Jeroboam’s sin was in making idols and constructing alternative worship centers and then ordaining priests who were not Levites, all of which contradicted God’s commands.

In other words, the leader led the way in disobedience to the ways of God. This is not the case occurring here in the US, a non-theocracy. Only in the area of abortion, which raises a clear line of delineation between the two candidates, can one make a charge of contradicting God’s commands. By the way, Gruden states that the primary motive behind support for abortion rights is a desire for sexual freedom without the responsibility of raising children. Put in those simple terms, abortion goes beyond the taking of a created life, but to the selfish disregard for and disobedience to God’s purpose of sex within the confines of marriage.

I also agree with Grudem’s statement that:

With Trump, we will get good policies and character flaws, but with Biden we will get bad policies and character flaws.4

Trump is arrogant, petulant, brash, and vindictive. And he has also been married 3 times and has been unfaithful in his marriages. There are flaws in need of work, but certainly not disqualifying for the role of a senior executive, even the Chief Executive of the United States. History and nations have treated many personally flawed leaders with accolades for their accomplishments, even Biblical leaders like Abraham, Jacob, and David.

But outside of any criticism of his production in almost 50 years in government, Gruden highlights an entirely different set of character flaws that apply to Vice President Biden:

The multiple allegations that Vice President Biden used his government office and influence to enrich members of his own family with millions of dollars from China, Russia, and Ukraine should be of deep concern, because using government power to enrich one’s own family is the consistent characteristic of corrupt leaders in many countries of the world.5

That John Piper did not reference these allegations about Vice President Biden in his article tells me he does not see them as substantive, or that he did not see them at all. Given the recent national media blackout on these allegations, which has just been lifted today to allow further scrutiny after congressional investigation, I suspect the latter is the case.

Either way, I, like Wayne Grudem, have voted for President Trump. In addition to supporting his unequivocal anti-abortion mindset and policies, my reasons go back to my 3 Guiding Principles in selecting executive leaders in business and politics: 1) Competence, 2) Fairness, and 3) Goodness (ideally Godliness). Beyond that however, I am also pleased to have been recently informed by Christian sources close to the President that Trump considers himself a “baby Christian” early in “his journey” of following Christ.

Encouraging to know, as we all do really know, that with God there is true hope for any and all of us.

Have you voted?

  1. What president to vote for or not ?
In the far past they did not have the problem with Roman leaders !

If we don’t vote is it sinful? Or if we do
Was there ever a real Christian president or just highly moral .

    To vote:
    1. Pray
    2. Read God’s word ( passages that might apply)
    3. Use your Godly trained conscience.

  2. You wrote all those great points in how to choose a leader in this country as a Christian/Non-believer just to throw your great points out the window…please don’t leave out why God chose Jeroboam over Rehoboam (1 King 11; 2 Chronicles 10), and trust God knew Jeroboam wasn’t going to uphold loyalty to Him, but he hoped he would as with any of us to do what is pleasing to Him – but as we know God chose Jeroboam because of Rehoboam being prideful/arrogant which led to his disregard of wise counsel that caused oppression against the people. Hmmm, I don’t consider myself a Bible scholar but I’m a Christian that’s devoted to studying the Word of God, so I’m definitely not a “baby Christian”😇 (Trump “Loves Us Christians” what a cunning way to mock Christians not just in 2016 even now in 2024) – yet it’s obvious this text is clearly and very simply pointing out that God’s concern was having a fair leader that wouldn’t deliberately cause an oppressive state for people. – So didn’t Trump have a Christian VP (Pence, a Christian that worked alongside Trump that no longer supports Trump 🤔) that gave him wise counsel and Trump totally disregarded that counsel (hence the whole motivation of what occurred Jan. 6,2021)….and that’s just one example of the many other arrogant driven stances Trump to this day upholds, a stance that has an undermining objective that quite frankly disrespects the “Rule of Law”, and with Harris, Biden or any leader making decisions that may not go well in the end should not and cannot bring judgement against their character or morality unless they disregard law or do what is unlawful when making the decision. There is only 1 basis on how Christians should judge moral character which is the the Fruit of The Spirit (Galatians 5:22-26). Now with neither being devout Christians we know they don’t fully embody the characteristics but come on… Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control, Kindness (& even a blind man can see that Trumps uses Kindness conditionally & quite frankly most of them conditionally) So how can you expect Trump to uphold enforcement of good policies with horrible characteristics, Yes I know you have to lie to yourself first to lie to others but you know very well that Trump is actually beyond being flawed morally, his heart is just about hard as bricks Sir…and Yes we know David made some bad decisions (politically & personally) but he wasn’t doomed to his moral flaws, David continually kept his heart posture in check due to him being devoted to God…Now if you want to compare some biblical leaders that didn’t follow God when they came into leadership let’s use Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar (Daniel 1 to 5) – , One leader was respected by Daniel despite his bad policies because obviously Nebuchadnezzar had more of a humble nature/heart, Belshazzar was the complete opposite, his arrogance and obviously corrupt heart led to his death, and Daniel did not want anything Belshazzar offered him, he refused the offers/gifts of Belshazzar but accepted Nebuchadnezzar’s gifts because obviously Daniel being devoted to God was able to properly discern the true heart posture of these rulers, hence Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God with initial revelation (He saw Jesus [pre-incarnate] in the fire with the Hebrew boys, Daniel 3:24-26) – and Trump with an attempt on his very life being taken has yet to humble himself, this man didn’t even think about shaking the hand of his opponent at the 1st/only debate (& from the look on his face he really didn’t care too)…and Sir there is no room for disdain, fear or hate in True American Patriotism only respect, trust and love, as we know through Jesus Christ even when there are unfair/ungodly policies in place we should still be respectful, operate accordingly and be driven by love with all things even pertaining to government, as Jesus showed us to give Caesar what is due Caesar and Give God what is due God (Matt. 22:21),As Christ pointed out to Peter pertaining to paying taxes, He encouraged Peter and us to do what is right no matter the land laws especially when that law isn’t forced upon you to follow sin or commit you to sinning (liquor, pornography, or even abortion laws aren’t enforced upon Christians/Non-Christians to follow, these are by choice laws, and quite frankly if you challenge abortion you should be challenging other laws in place that promote sinful actions) – Liquor, Weed, Pornography, & Abortion Laws are in place just like the law of following Christ you have an open choice to partake or not; so a candidate who doesn’t fully follow God when it comes to laws/or rights for this country (America “In God We Trust” – a nation full of people who can choose what God they choose to “Trust” in) should only be fully rejected by Christians if that ungodly law/policy eliminates the by choice option as to threaten a persons freedom as an American Citizen or poses a major threat upon a citizen’s life. Also you mentioned Biden being corrupt, and did you have the audacity to call Covid an imposed epidemic, 1st off as of right now it seems Biden was just being supportive of his family including them in his dealings while his son was being deceitful and taking advantage his Dad, Biblical example of that is Joseph, his family benefited greatly from his position and although his brothers were corrupt Joseph didn’t hold it against them, he stuck by and helped his family whether they were right or wrong (Genesis 37, 42-50) secondly Biden has not been convicted as Trump has been for corrupt involvement not for 1 or 2 but 36 felony counts; as far as Covid: In 2020 alone over 380,000 people lost their lives in the US from Covid (over 7,000,000,000 globally and counting) which isn’t something to belittle or use as a means to uplift Trump by saying he was doing well until Covid, No Sir for 3 years even year 4 during Covid he was helping people fester in hate and division, he was running this country arrogantly and making a lot of unwise decisions, we know nothing happens without God’s approval and with Covid occurring it just about reset this world like the flood did and with it God provided a wake up call for all people to know Him in a more personal way. Continued prayer is definitely needed for both candidates and as Daniel prayed and requested for God to incline His ear and hear I’m praying for God to acknowledge all the righteous prayers going up for wisdom to choose accordingly and wisely – Believing that in this present election God will continue to prove to be holy, trusting God to guide believers in how we gain knowledge of each candidate so that we make the proper choice in choosing the best candidate who will genuinely address the major concerns of this nation and I pray for their hearts to be humbled and excepting of Christ with the experience. Amen 🙏🏽♥️😇

    • Hi Tamara, I appreciate your passion. I would direct you to my updated post here in 2024 in which I revisit this presidential election in light of the Trump vs Harris campaign: Selecting a President – Again (https://biblicalviewpoint.com/2024/09/13/selecting-a-president-again/)

You should read the comments to this updated BV post and my responses. The comments are for and against various sides, which is to be expected. It’s clear that emotions run high but we should take a measured stance that looks at all angles and not be so entrenched in our views that we ignore data/truth that has been uncovered and shared by sources we may not have seen.

You might also be interested in my latest ongoing posts about the BOOK of ROMANS, particularly this past week on The Government in ROMANS 13. This upcoming week I will expound on the plight of Christians who are up against civil government that is evil and/or opposes the Word of God.

      • Don’t blame God for your choice in candidate. You didn’t even follow up any of your three points with scriptures or how trump fits those categories (which he clearly doesn’t). You voted for him because you are selfish. And now he is with chaos as his main weapon, destroying our great country.

  3. Lady, lady, lady….you just wrote a mini sermon in your response. I’m sure some of your statement is accurate, but your attitude towards “Trump” whom you quoted, well you just made it personal. None of us are “perfect” not even you, we are all flawed individuals, we all have some skeletons in the closet. The article is clear and to the point, recognizing weaknesses in both parties, more so Trump. But you went on a rampage about Trump, please tell me where did Trump put us in an oppressive state, as you quoted “deliberately cause an oppressive state for people” And about the heart, only GOD knows the intent of the heart of man, 1Samuel 16:7b, “For the LORD does not see as man sees; for a man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” GOD does not judge us by our outward behavior or our acts like man does, but by the intents and desires of the heart. You mentioned “unjust law/policy”, abortion, weed, homosexuality, illegal immigration, gender transition, which side is all these coming from? I would like for you to give us one (1) law/policy that Trump put into practice that went against the WORD OF GOD (Bible). As you quoted “Biden was just being supportive of his family including them in his dealings”. What dealings? , how dare you compare this to the story of Joseph and his brothers, GOD used the life of Joseph to save a Nation! You quoted that “Biden has not been convicted”, does this mean he is innocent? You said that you are “devoted to studying the Word of GOD”, you do know that GOD has and will have the final say, just because someone may get by now, we don’t get away, we all have a day of reckoning, a day when we will have to give an account. I would like to mention that Donald J. Trump was not the cause of “COVID”, but it seems that some even put that on him, this man has been and still is being blamed, blamed, blamed. It’s too hot/cold outside”, Hey let’s blame Trump! If I counted correctly you mentioned Trump’s name eleven (11) times, Biden three times. I do like how you ended you reply although you didn’t hide your disdain for Trump. Be blessed..
